OUR BELIEFS

The principle belief underlying our approach to our work is described below:

"All human beings are more alike than different and share the common basic needs for love, belonging, meaning in life, fun, dignity and respect. There is no differentiation between "them" and "us". There is simply "we". We is all of us. All of humanity. The key is "we"." (Jack Pearpoint & Marsha Forest, 1997.)

Disability can be seen in the same context as racism, sexism and ageism where marginalised groups, have been excluded from society because systematic responses limit them, isolated them and restrict their citizenship. Disabled people are therefore at real risk of exclusion from community membership. By identifying with the people we support we can see that they have been excluded from life opportunities that we take for granted and therefore need support to overcome societal barriers and assistance to live a lifestyle that is personally relevant.

This belief system is at the heart of our work and underpins our relationship with the person we are offering support to. Rather than us being the ‘expert” and taking control our intention is to develop effective interdependence between ourselves and people we support, their families, allies and community.
